Elsa moved across Long Island and the Rockaways early on Friday, July 9, bringing heavy rain and whipping winds, which toppled trees and downed power lines, leaving thousands without power overnight.
As of around 10 a.m. on Friday, PSEG was still working on 227 active outages that were impacting 6,634 of the company’s 1,172,708 customers on Long Island.
In Nassau, 4,519 customers were reporting outages, with 1,349 in Suffolk, and 35 in the Rockaway Peninsula.
Oyster Bay was the hardest hit, with 2,196 customers still reporting outages, followed by Hempstead (1,679), and North Hempstead (1,235).
In Suffolk, Islip (708) was reporting the most outages on Friday morning, with other outages reported in Southampton (257), East Hampton (175), Smithtown (145), Brookhaven (70), and Babylon (52).
PSEG Long Island has secured approximately 1,000 additional lines, tree, and support personnel from out-of-state to assist with power restoration. Many of the crews arrived Thursday, July 8 to be ready to work on Friday.
Crews restored power to more than 10,000 PSEG Long Island customers.
“Electric service crews are working to restore outages safely and as quickly as possible, and will continue to work throughout the day and night,” PSEG officials said. “More than 2,500 line workers, tree trimmers, surveyors, and other utility personnel are dedicated to the restoration effort.”
Complete restoration for all outages is expected no later than 6:15 p.m. on Friday.
